Date

AREDN Mesh Activities this week

K7ICY/ Ken Tolliver

Hey!

We have a couple activities coming up this week.

Activity #1-------- Wednesday Evening. 7-9PM Another AREDN Mesh Flash Party!
  1. I have a bunch of items to be flashed with AREDN.
  2. Same place as last time.
  3. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Meetinghouse
  4. 11065 SW North Dakota Street
  5. Tigard OR 97223
  1. Please bring your laptop ready to flash the inventory items.
  2. An extension cord would help too.
  3. I'm guessing there are 75 devices to flash.
  4. If you can, download the various flash versions ahead of time.
  5. If I remember right, the WiFi there was highly filtered.
If you can help, please let me know ASAP by either Text to 503-544-7945 or Email to ktolliver@...

Activity #2-------- Saturday Morning, St. Vincent Hospital AREDN Mesh Installation , Part 2.
Meet at the West Pavillion Entrance at 7:30AM. It'll be a hot day, so we'll start early.
We will finish installing and testing the system on the Roof.
This time it will go a lot smoother.

We Will be:
Running Shielded CAT5 Cabling
Terminating Cabling ( I bought the special kind of RJ-45 connector)
Connecting up the 320 Watt Solar Power System
Extending the Antenna Mounting area-- with Unistrut
Attaching new Antenna Mounts to the Unistrut
We will see how well the new JACK NUTS hold in the thin Tin wall.
If it's still an issue, we will screw and glue J-Pipe Antenna Poles.
Populate Power/Switch/Router Outdoor Box
Need someone to go up a 10 foot ladder
Installing and Aiming the AREDN Mesh Devices
Bottled Water and Cold Snacks will be provided
Bring a folding camp chair to sit in for Breaks.

We'll start with Justin installing two devices up on the roof of the Enclosed HVAC Building.
That's the only "risky" part of it. He's certified to climb roofs and I will be his Spotter.
Then we will move on to the other Antenna Mounts on the Privacy Screen wall.
I think it will move pretty fast.
The helpers from last time were great.
I'd love to have you back again this time.
And we will be more organized.

Expect it to run from 7:30AM to 10:30 or 11.
Hopefully, they won't shut down Hwy 217 this time.
If for some reason we don't finish by 11, we will quit at 11, and finish it another day.
The forecast is 90 on Saturday, so we don't want to stay any later.

If you can help, please let me know ASAP by either Text to 503-544-7945 or Email to ktolliver@...
I'll put you on the list for security clearance.

Your help is greatly appreciated,

Ken Tolliver

AREDN MESH Flash Party-- Saturday 9-Noon in Tigard

K7ICY/ Ken Tolliver

Hi:

As you know, we switched from HamWAN to AREDN Mesh awhile back.
Were getting ready for some installs and need to get the equipment ready.
We need a few helpers.

If you have the time, swing by the LDS North Dakota Meetinghouse in Tigard (Take the Greenburg Exit from 217)..
Saturday Morning-- 9-Noon
Bring a Laptop, extension cord, and Ethernet Cable.
Experts will be there to help you (and me) figure out how to Flash things.

We will be Flashing the AREDN Mesh Firmware onto the equipment to be installed at St. Vincent Hospital and other sites.
If you have some AREDN Mesh Equipment bring it too. If it isn't Flashed yet, you can do it there.
Those MikroTik LHG Dishes that we had sold for HamWAN are likely compatible with being Flashed with AREDN Mesh.
Everyone likes Show & Tell time.

Address of the North Dakota Chapel:
11065 SW North Dakota Street
Tigard OR 97223

9AM to Noon (Could end early if we get our work done)

Hope to see you there,
73

Re: Reminder: Oregon HamWAN Status and Planning Meeting TODAY, Wednesday, December 1, 7:00 PM Pacific Time

The Washington Dept. of Natural Resources cancelled all site contracts for Amateur Radio Equipment (Repeaters and HamWAN) at DNR Sites as a cost cutting measure. I believe that affected 4 PSDR HamWAN sites. In particular, it shut down Baw Faw and Larch Mtn. They were the last two hops to Portland.
They are looking for replacement sites.
The rest of PSDR's HamWAN Network is still up and running.

Ken announced that we are no longer planning to deploy HamWAN in Oregon, pending the approval of ARDC (which provided the $88K grant).

Our current plan is to support the deployment of Willamette Valley Mesh AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network). You can find more information about the Willamette Valley Mesh Network here: https://willamettevalleymesh.net .

There are a number of reasons for this decision, including cost and availability of equipment, availability of volunteers with the necessary technical expertise, support by county emergency managers, the shutdown of the PSDR (Puget Sound Data Ring) HamWAN site at Larch Mountain, etc.

Oregon HamWAN Updates

Herb Weiner

For those who haven't heard, we've received an $88,000 grant to deploy HamWAN in Portland, Oregon, and down to Salem, Oregon and to connect to the Puget Sound Data Ring (https://hamwan.org).

Progress has been slower than we had hoped, but we are still working on this. We could use some assistance in the following areas:

  • If you have Mikrotik networking experience, we could use your assistance with some IT work.
  • If you have contacts who own or manage towers, we are still looking for potential HamWAN sector sites.

Also, for those who have not heard, the Larch Mountain HamWAN site has been deactivated. This increases the priority to get our Oregon HamWAN sites operational.

  • Sector Antennas Pointing SE (120 degrees) use 5.900 GHz (10 MHz wide).
  • Sector Antennas Pointing SW (240 degrees) use .5880 GHz (10 MHz wide).

I am still awaiting information from Ken on the standard frequencies used by Point-to-Point links. Once I receive this information, I will add it to the https://www.oregonhamwan.org website.
